What Are Flooring Trims Used For?

Flooring trims may seem like a finishing touch, but they're fundamental to the performance, safety, and longevity of any flooring installation. Whether in a busy commercial environment or a stylish residential space, trims ensure that flooring not only looks complete but functions flawlessly.

We offer a wide range of trims designed to meet the demands of modern interiors. From safety-critical environments to high-end design schemes, our solutions support both form and function.

Floor trims serve multiple essential purposes:

  • Bridging height differences between adjoining floor surfaces to prevent trip hazards and ensure smooth transitions.
  • Covering expansion gaps that allow flooring materials to move naturally without causing damage.
  • Enhancing aesthetic appeal with clean lines and coordinated finishes that elevate the overall design.
  • Concealing wiring and cables to maintain a tidy, professional appearance while supporting compliance.

What are the main types of stair nosing?

When it comes to stair nosing, there are four main product ranges and four profile shapes to know. Each combination delivers tailored safety, durability, compliance, and style for any environment.

The 4 main types of stair nosing shape. Stair nosing profiles come in a variety of shapes, each tailored for specific environments and flooring types:

  • Square profiles: Feature a clean, straight-edged design that fits flush with square steps, making it perfect for general commercial interiors.
  • Rakeback profiles: Reduce visual bulk with a sloped face angled back from the tread; ideal for retail, healthcare, and education settings.
  • Kinked Face profiles: Blend a square edge with a subtle angled face, offering a secure fit on both square and rakeback steps.
  • Bullnose profiles: Provide a rounded front edge that softens the stair appearance; great for hospitality venues, heritage buildings, and residential-style environments.

Entrance Matting for Commercial Office - First AND Second Impressions Count

Creating a clean, safe and welcoming environment within a commercial office building results in a positive impression for visitors and employees alike. Choosing an effective barrier matting system can help achieve this.

Primary barrier matting is an ideal solution for exterior and interior entrances and, when installed as the first point of contact, will help to remove and retain dirt and moisture. This is often the focus for many specifiers and installers, however, there is a risk that some residual moisture is carried beyond the primary matting system. When coupled with the fact that many commercial offices, especially in cities, typically opt for terrazzo, marble or other hard flooring, this can significantly increase the risk of slips.

Barrier matting also provides an effective solution to reducing maintenance costs by protecting the appearance of surrounding floorcoverings, ensuring great impressions are made repeatedly.

The importance of slip resistance in bathrooms and wet rooms

Bathrooms and wet rooms are essential spaces in both homes and commercial environments, but they are also among the most hazardous when it comes to slips and falls. Water, soap, and other substances can easily create slippery surfaces, posing a risk to everyone - especially children, the elderly, and those with mobility challenges.

Ensuring slip resistance in these areas is not just a matter of convenience; it's a crucial safety consideration that can prevent accidents and promote confidence in daily routines.

The right flooring plays a vital role in reducing the risk of slips. Traditional tiles or smooth surfaces may look appealing, but they often fail to provide the necessary grip underfoot, particularly when wet.

Specifying Self-Levelling (Smoothing) Compounds

Self-levelling compounds, more accurately termed smoothing compounds, are used to provide a smooth base for floor coverings. They self-smooth rather than self-level and will not correct level discrepancies without controlled application.

  • Correct specification is critical to the performance and appearance of the finished floor.
  • Substrates must be clean, dry and sound, in accordance with British Standards.
  • Excess moisture must be controlled prior to application.
  • Compound selection must suit the substrate type (e.g. concrete, timber, mastic asphalt, calcium sulphate).
  • The compound must meet the strength requirements of the floor covering and anticipated traffic.
  • Surface regularity (SR1-SR3) defines smoothness, not level, and should be specified.
  • Drying time and the installation programme should be considered.
  • Low-emission and sustainable products may be required to meet environmental standards.
  • Correct preparation, priming and application are essential to long-term performance.

Where to Weld

Plan welds carefully. Keep them to a minimum and position them discreetly to maintain the room’s appearance. Avoid doorways and high-traffic areas, and consider features, access points and drainage early to prevent installation issues.

Match Making

For the best visual result, welds should be as inconspicuous as possible. Using a matching weld rod is key, as even small colour differences can make welds stand out.

Maintenance

Welds should be trimmed flush with the floor to prevent dirt traps. Regular cleaning, including coving areas, is essential to maintain hygiene and appearance.

Welding Different Floor Types

When welding vinyl to rubber flooring, a rubber weld rod should be used, as it will bond to both materials. Vinyl weld rods will not adhere to rubber.

Damp Proof Membranes: Protect Your Wood Floor

Moisture is one of the biggest causes of flooring failures. A damp proof membrane (DPM) creates a barrier between concrete or screed subfloors and your wood floor, keeping moisture at bay.

When to use a DPM:

  • If subfloor moisture exceeds the manufacturer's limits.
  • As a precaution, even if moisture is within limits, to prevent future issues.

Checking moisture:

  • Always measure with a calibrated moisture meter.
  • Don't assume it will be checked for you.

Tips for success:

  • Plan for the DPM before installation.
  • Cover the full area correctly.
  • Keep records of moisture readings and DPM use.

A correctly installed DPM protects your floor and reduces costly call-backs - a small step that makes a big difference.

Why Luxury Vinyl Tile Is a Great Choice for Your Home

Luxury Vinyl Tile (LVT) has come a long way from traditional vinyl flooring. Today, it offers stylish designs, long-lasting durability, and practical benefits that make it ideal for both commercial spaces and domestic environments.

LVT is available in a wide range of designs, including wood-effect planks, herringbone patterns, stone finishes, and contemporary tile styles. This variety makes it easy to achieve a high-end look that suits any interior.

Designed to withstand everyday wear, luxury vinyl tile is durable, slip-resistant, and fully waterproof. This makes it perfect for high-traffic areas such as kitchens, dining rooms, and hallways. With proper care, LVT can last for decades.

Installation is quick and straightforward, with both click-fit and stick-down options available. It also works well with underfloor heating and is easy to clean, requiring minimal maintenance.

Combining visual appeal with comfort and durability, luxury vinyl tile offers the look of natural materials without the drawbacks-making it a smart and stylish flooring solution for any home.

Amazing Uses for Artificial Grass

Artificial grass is popping up all over and not just in gardens. From commercial spaces to public venues, it's become a reliable and low-maintenance alternative to natural grass, which can easily suffer from poor weather, soil conditions, and heavy use.

One of the most surprising uses is in gyms, where artificial turf provides excellent cushioning and grip for weight training, functional workouts, and sprint zones. It's softer than carpet but still stable underfoot.

In offices, artificial grass is helping to create calmer, more inspiring environments. Modern workplaces are moving away from sterile designs, and green features-even artificial ones-can boost creativity and wellbeing in breakout areas and meeting rooms.

Rooftop spaces are another popular choice. Artificial grass allows businesses to add greenery without worrying about watering, drainage, or ongoing maintenance-perfect for urban environments with limited outdoor space.

You'll also find artificial turf at festivals and events, where it provides a cleaner, warmer, and more durable surface in high-traffic areas. And in nurseries and daycare centres, it offers a soft, safe, and maintenance-free playground solution.

Versatile, durable, and visually appealing, artificial grass continues to transform spaces in creative and practical ways.

What Is LRV and Why It Matters When Specifying Carpet Tiles

Light Reflectance Value (LRV) measures how much light a surface reflects on a 0-100 scale. For carpet tiles, this is determined by colour, texture, and material quality under British Standards.

In office design, LRV is crucial. Higher-LRV tiles reflect more light, brightening interiors and reducing reliance on artificial lighting—boosting energy efficiency. It also improves visual comfort and accessibility; a 30-point contrast between surfaces helps those with visual impairments navigate safely.

However, higher LRV isn't always optimal as very light flooring shows dirt easily. For many commercial spaces, mid-tone tiles strike the best balance between brightness and durability. Correctly specifying LRV allows designers to create accessible, well-lit spaces that effectively balance aesthetics with functionality.

Well-Being & Holistic Office Environments

Great office design does more than impress—it supports well-being and productivity. This requires a holistic approach to light, sound, comfort, and nature.

Natural light sets the tone. Maximising daylight with high-LRV finishes boosts mood and performance. Biophilic design is also essential; greenery and natural textures reduce stress, creating calmer workplaces.

Acoustic comfort is critical, using carpet tiles and quiet zones to control noise. Ergonomics keep people energised through adjustable seating, while a calm, neutral colour palette aids concentration.

Finally, breakout areas should offer a true reset with softer seating and warmer lighting. When these elements come together, offices become restorative, human-centred places where people truly want to work.

Surprising Benefits of Carpet

Choosing flooring-carpet tiles or hard surfaces like LVT-can be tough. But carpet offers some surprising advantages.

  • Comfort & warmth: Carpet insulates naturally, keeping spaces warm, reducing energy costs, and providing cushioned underfoot comfort that lowers fatigue and improves safety.
  • Noise reduction: Carpet absorbs sound, cutting airborne noise and echo, making spaces quieter and more comfortable without extra acoustic treatments.
  • Cost-effective: Easier to install and maintain than hard flooring, carpet saves on cleaning time and chemical costs.
  • Flexible & adaptable: Carpet tiles can be lifted, replaced, or reconfigured-perfect for evolving workplaces and learning environments.
  • Durable: Modern carpet tiles withstand heavy footfall and even wheeled traffic while keeping their look.
  • Design versatility: Endless colours, textures, and patterns support wayfinding, zoning, and strong visual identity.

Carpet may not always be the obvious choice, but its comfort, performance, and flexibility make it a smart flooring solution for homes and commercial spaces alike.
